The last year has been a transitional one for me, to say the least. Mall Walk is finito but, I am very happy to be unearthing these final recordings as they are, in my opinion some of our best. There’s no drama, no bad blood…we simply ran our course creatively and felt it was best to put it to rest. Very grateful to have played with Dan and Nick for so long and remain extremely proud of all the music together. Here’s “Rose” and “Out To Lunch”:
Blues Lawyer is a new collaboration between me, Elyse Schrock (The World), Nic Russo (Dick Stusso), and Alejandra Alcala (Preening). It’s started as a joke, with the intention of only playing a couple shows but, it’s a lotta fun and I don’t wanna stop. So, we made a record and we’re gonna do a little touring. Excited to see where this all goes.
I first met Charlotte while on tour in Europe. Her group, MARAUDEUR and Dry Erase played a house show in a small town in East Germany called, Halle. It was one of the most memorable shows of my 15 years of playing in bands. The energy of their set was beyond captivating and the atmosphere of this strange yet familiar setting was the perfect backdrop to their music. I knew instantly that I had to work with them in some capacity. When Charlotte sent me her solo project’s latest recording I was hooked. Spare arrangments with deceptively intricate bass lines weaved together by Charlotte’s signature sing-speak. It’s post-punk and pop and dare, I say even a little jazz-y at times. Anyway, I’m super excited to be releasing this tape. Hope ya dig it ~
Oh no, it’s Evil Twins! Mother Nature’s deadly duo of doom come out swinging with their self-titled debut on Vacant Stare Records. The post-pop Oakland 2 piece keep it simple with short songs about nothing and everything. Sure to be one of this year’s favorites, Evil Twins are that new new you’ve been waiting for…
I’ve kept things a little quiet on the label front for the past few months (been broke, singing the same 2 karaoke songs every other night, hanging out at Eli’s too much etc) but, I still love releasing new music from unknown artists on antiquated formats. So, now I have a bunch of Vacant Stare stuff in the works. I’ll be tabling alongside many other great bay labels at BARF this Sunday afternoon. Keep an ear out for the Evil Twins debut, Purpur Spytt (Solo project of Charlotte Mahrmud from Maraudeur ~ my first release from a non Bay based artist) cassette comp, and more V EXCITING NEW MUSIC.🤘🤘🤘Anyway maybe I’ll see ya Sunday.
Solar Rips is a collaboration between me and Luis Gutierrez (Religious Girls/1988). Here’s a video Mall Walk bassist, Daniel Brown made for our first single, “Pay.” The debut EP, “Not Yet” is out August 18th on Vacant Stare.
